Stratification and egalitarianism: stratification, strata (stratum). a. i. Systematic oppression: egalitarianism (all born equal, e. g. No chiefs, no class differences, men and women were equal. One person has legitimate right to tell other what to do. Issue of legitimacy = culture issue: headman: achieved status. Have quite a reputation, gained influenced bc of skills, wisdom, fairness, etc. Give person a special influence within group: no real authority. Can convince you, argue, persuade, lead by example, but not order. a. i. Charisma, personal abilities, etc: no real authority. Organized these institutions: chief: ascribed status, authority over kinsmen. Power to find people, banish, kill: authority vested in position of chief. b. i. Chief lead lineage (more land, higher status, chief comes from chief lineage). Similar to moka, inviting clans: leaders of states, diversity. Can be ascribed or achieved: authority over everyone in a territory, authority and the mobilization of labor, bigman a. i. Influences people to do things, est. close personal relationships with people.
