Speech event - culturally meaningful activities with particular rules and expectations for how to use language (e. g. how to introduce yourself, someone else) Speech community - regular and frequent interaction by means of shared body of verbal signs and set off from others by signi cant differences in language usage. Dialectal - variants used by groups that are different from other groups w/in same broader cultural environment. Ex. regional dialects, internet slang, sports jargon. Superposed - variants used in different activities carried on by same group. Ex. job interviews, asking someone out, ordering soup. Verbal repertoires - ways of talking that speakers can use to create different relationships with different kinds of people.
