Intervention was one of the underlying causes of the subsequent russo-japanese war. This war was fought between the russian empire and the empire of japan over rival imperial ambitions in manchuria and korea. The treaty of portsmouth stated that the defeated russians recognized japan as the dominant power in korea and turned over their leases of port arthur and the liaodong.
