Document Summary

Pottery appears to have been the main focus of j mon artistic expression. Although woodcarving may also have been of great significance, judging from the few surviving examples of dugout canoes, substantial structures for communal activities, and large sculptures. Clay figures and ornaments were also made in abundance. Recently discovered lacquered objects from the jomon period demonstrate a mastery of complex craft techniques and the development of a sophisticated aesthetic. J mon villages consisted of a small group of semi-subterranean, or partially underground, pit houses supported by interior posts and covered with thatched roofs that extended to the ground. Horticulture of a range of plants was introduced to the japanese islands before 5000 b. c. , and sophisticated techniques were developed for collecting and storing wild plant material. The jomon people created a wide range of ornaments and ritual objects that attest to a vigorous ceremonial life.
