Enku reason why author has interest in the world of buddhist sculpture. Author first encounter with this wood was at arako-kannonji temple in nagoya. Unusual forms, which differs sharply from the contemporary buddhist figures of other sculptures, and also attracted by strength of expression that makes them very modern and compatible with people of today. More important was a feeling of nearness or accessibility in each of enkus works which the author had never seen present in buddhist sculpture. Enku was discovered for the general public in the 1950s, it is natural to question why his works attracted attention for the first time 300 yrs after they had been created - 1. General attitude of japanese and foreign art critics to sculpture of the 17th century has prevailed to recent times. 17th century was considered to be a period of deterioration of sculpture, same time period folk sculpture flourished.
