Descent groups: unilineal kinship, lineage: a group of people who can trace descent in a unilineal manner to a single common ancestor. b. i. Males and females belong to a lineage too. Doesn"t matter if it is patrilineage or matrilineage. b. ii. 2. Everybody belongs to a lineage: clan c. i. Group of people who believe themselves to be descended from a single common ancestor in a unilineal manner, but they cannot demonstrate the links c. iv. Start calling a clan when you don"t know how you relate. Kindreds: bilateral & unilineal kinship, ego-centered network of bilateral, affinal (relatives through marriage), and fictive kin. b. i. Ego centered network does not have these properties: lineages have a sense of groupness. Chain of command: clans can have groupness. e. It is not an issue of size but it is an issue of relatedness that defines groups. Aspects of beliefs can set up aspects of social organization.
