North and south america have relatively low prevalence rate of hiv. About 33 million people worldwide are presently living with hiv. 63% of these people are in sub-saharan africa. 20% of these people are in south or south east asia. Moved into drug-using populations; eventually leading to the transmission via heterosexual sex. Southeast asia, india, china, and former soviet union. Many of these countries obtained the virus through intravenous drug use. In russia, there were more people being infected with hiv through drug use because of the cheap prices of heroin than sex. The global prevalence of hiv has stabilized at 0. 8% over the past decade in adults. Few changes have occurred in latin america, western europe, and north america. Lower prevalence in sub-saharan africa mainly due to decline in new infections. Prevalence is a function of incidence and duration of disease. Not reflective of ones risk of getting disease or incidence.
