Document Summary
Mitochondria and chloroplasts change energy from one form to. Mitochondrial: sites of cellular respiration, the metabolic process that uses oxygen to generate. Atp by extracting energy from sugars, fats, and other fuels. Chloroplasts: found in plants and algae, and is the site of photosynthesis. Endosymbiont theory: it states that an early ancestor of eukaryotic cells engulfed an oxygen-using nonphotosynthetic eukaryotic cell, that formed a relationship with the host cell. Enclosed by two membranes, each a phospholipid bilayer with a unique collection of embedded proteins. Outer membrane is smooth, inner membrane, is twisted with infoldings called cristae. Cristae gives the inner mitochondrial membrane a large surface area, enhancing the productivity of cellular respiration. The larger it is, the more activity it has. Inner membrane- divides mitochondrion into two internal compartments. Intermembrane space- narrow region between inner and outer membrane. Contains many different enzymes and mitochondrial dna and ribosomes. The enzymes speed up some of the steps in cellular respiration.
