Document Summary

An ecosystem consists of the multiple communities of organisms that live in an area along with abiotic components such as the soil, climate, water, and atmosphere. The biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem are linked by flows of energy and nutrients. Npp : in an ecosystem, the total amount of carbon fixed by photosynthesis over a given time period minus the amount oxidized during cellular respiration. Carbon fixation is the process of converting inorganic carbon (carbon dioxide) to organic compounds by living organisms. Describe how productivity in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems is limited. Terrestrial systems: temperature, precipitation, sunlight, and nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. Aquatic systems: availability of nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and iron, all necessary for photosynthesis. When tropical forests are converted into agricultural fields, the fields are only productive for a few seasons. Thousands of years of high rainfall have washed away the nutrients in the soil.
