Document Summary

Insect rearing (prediction of yield: plant or insect quarantine(population growth of introduced species, fishery (prediction of fish dynamics, pest & disease outbreaks. Logistic growth: population grows exponentially when the population is small but then population growth slows as the population approaches the carrying capacity of its habitat. Logistic growth is commonly observed in nature: ex: fur seals. Then the growth rate of the population would probably explode! Important in trying to predict the fate of a population (like polar bears: usually--but not always--life tables are based only on females, b/c they are the ones reproducing. *from textbook: net rate of 1 means the population will stay the same size, some of the data from a life table can be used to plot a survivorship curve. Types of survivorship curves: number of survivors on the y-axis and the age of the organism on the x-axis.
