People respond to restrictive diets, missing meals, or rapid meal consumption by failing to experience satiety and therefore they remain very hungry. They rarely feel satiated and they therefore continue to feel hungry, eat, and gain weight. Satiation occurs when the gut hormone pyy goes up and ghrelin goes down. These hormone levels start to change 12-15 min into the meal. Obese individuals eat too quickly to feel satiated. Normalizing eating rate increases pyy and decreases ghrelin to terminate meals.
