Week 05- notes on metabolic rate lab protocol: 1: metabolism: the rate at which energy is used by an organism. An individual"s metabolic rate (mr) is affected by? a number of factor such as: activity level stress digestion illness pregnancy. Standard metabolic rate (smr): occurs in ectotherms the resting mr at a given temperature. Human physiologist often include other minor determinants of bmr such as: men have a higher bmr than woman, even after taking into account the difference in mass gender. Bmr decreases with increasing age thyroid hormones can stimulate metabolism. Endotherms: have a very high rate of metabolic heat production their major source of heat is internal. Ectotherms: generally rely on environmental sources of heat can not maintain own body temp. via metabolism. Heterotherms: body temperature can change (often same as the environmental temperature) The difference between homeotherms and heterotherms is based on the stability of body temperature.
