Document Summary
Sandel"s critique of market triumphalism, that is, the notion that markets are the primary instrument of the common good. Origins: early 1980s reaganism and thatcherism gave great momentum to market triumphalism; did not end but became institutionalized and popularized under later governments, and in popular culture. Liberal governments moderated but cemented this logic government not the solution but the problem markets are the primary instrument of the public good. We haven"t discussed and considered the expansion of markets and market logics into realms of life into spheres governed by other values. We haven"t been aware of these incursions in many cases, we certainly haven"t discussed their moral stakes. The belief that the big government can control the free market is the tension; the thing we are concerned about. Occurred in aspects of our lives that we don"t necessarily think about. What do we think of government doing: law, security, taxes, social programs (welfare, food stamps)
