Document Summary
Encounter situations as we go through our daily lives. Often times, we choose not to go or do anything. Why do people choose not to partake in opportunities. Most of the previous theories focus on why people are more prone to criminality. Anomie is: a state of society characterized by a breakdown of social norms or rules, a state of an individual characterized by normlessness (e. g. , anomic suicide, feeling of closeness or integration with society members. If you have anomie you have a weakened bond with another person. Social control theorists look at the bond (weak or strong) Social bond/social control bonds control you from committing crime. Assumption: everyone is motivated to commit crime (similar to classical school: people commit crime to gain some sort of rewards (financial, physical, emotional, etc. ) Society exerts control over most individuals and prevents individuals from committing crime (social order) Crimes are committed by those with weak controls. Weak controls crime; not individual factors.
