Can be defined differently depending on culture. Sex = biological & gender = something more expressive. Gender -> social category that you are put into. Sex = biological or anatomical apparatus physical traits, sex organs, chromosomes, chemicals/hormones (male/female) Ability to procreate -> women give birth & men do not (a less visible biological feature) Some scholarship holds that there are at least 5 sexes (will get to that later) Gender = cultural meanings attached to those differences (masculinity/femininity) Now: think serena williams playing after birth. 1970"s -> ann oakley refers to dualism created within contexts over time. Can examine representations of the body over time. Tasks separated based on masculinity & femininity. Historically, certain stereotypes about women"s delicate nature . Gender has to do with behavior differences & social attitudes between the sexes. Historically -> women seen as more capable. Men used to have trouble getting custody of children.
