Anxiety is generally a normal and helpful emotion, but when levels of anxiety are no longer appropriate for the situation, distressing, or preventative in functioning it is problematic. Specific phobia - intense, irrational fear of a specific object or situation. Object or situation almost always provokes immediate fear/anxiety. Must be active avoidance or endurance with intense fear/anxiety. Distress/impairment in at least one area of functioning. Fear/anxiety about one or more social situations in which individual is exposed to scrutiny by others that almost always evoke fear/anxiety.
