The boundaries of the portion define the limits of the system. A system is characterized by whether it exchanges energy or mass with surrounding across its boundaries. Isolated system - does not exist - matter and energy do not transfer. Closed system - matter doesn"t come out but energy. Open system - you can transfer both matter and energy. Iclicker question 1 - the little globe of fish is closed system because matter is not exchanging but energy is because of sunlight, for algae/photosynthesis. Iclicker question 2 - earth is a mostly closed system because energy is transferred and matter is also, but very little matter is moved. Almost miniscule in fact hydrogen/helium are retained by our atmosphere - they go to space - weird fact. Earth is a mostly closed system because energy can enter and leave the system. Changes in one part will affect the other parts.
