Skills need to successfully transition to kindergarten: cognitive/academic skills. Some early literacy skills: gross and ne motor. Use scissors, glue, paint and other art materials. Encourage children to express how they are feelings: make kindergarten exciting, not something scary. Schedule a visit to the new school for the children. Teach the children the kindergarten rules and practice them. Encourage parents to attend kindergarten round up: discuss child care options with working parents, discuss the transfer of records, help arrange a visit for the parent and child to the new school. Encourage parents to build their child"s con dence about going to school. Introduce parents to other parents who will attend the new program together. Encourage meetings of new classmates prior to the start of school: discuss changes in services for parents that may not be available in the public school, what teachers can do to facilitate the transition. Open houses: meetings for teachers and students.
