Lecture 17- the church under fire: religion and civil war el salvador. El salvador civil war pitted the military against marxist guerilla groups. In cities union leaders and catholic activists are the ones who are being massacred. Does not mean that the fmln does not kill peasants. Become targets because catholic activism to help the poor is seen as support of the guerilla cause. Most catholics don"t see their mission as supporting the fmln. Talk about their mission in serving god"s will to support the christian liberation. Oscar romero is killed at the altar. He was killed a month after his request to carter asking him to stop military aid to el salvador. A week after he broadcasted a sermon telling the army to stop obeying orders. He is a product of vatican ii. He wanted to be a mediator and avoid the blood spill.
