Pretty much everyone in cuba celebrated january 1, 1959 when revolution takes power. It had broad based support from elites to peasants. Batista had alienated large sectors of society by corruption, repression, his illegal rule. Before, he had staged a coup to become cuba"s leader. It was a society debauched by drugs, gambling, prostitution all catering to tourists prostitution all catering to tourists. The economy had been hijacked by us and foreigners not their own.
