For marx, history is just the result of laws. Dialectical because two forces clash and out of that comes a synthesis or new social structure (capitalism) Materialism because it was about material realities and not ideas. The result would be a true socialist society. Under feudalism, certain families rose to prominence through military service. They retained privileges and control over land. Peasants were bound to provide them with food and rent. For marxists, the french revolution was a struggle between 2 classes. New kinds of production and consumption emerged in the 19th century. New kinds of wage labor were needed. As more workers moved to towns, around factories and mines, new kings of consciousness developed.
