Conflicts between poleis, greeks and persians during greco-persian wars lead to creation of the delian league. Athenian general, orator and statesman pericles responsible for turning the delian league into the athenian empire. Called the first citizen of athens by the historian thucydides. Had a weird forehead according to plutarch, a lot of sculptures have a helmet over his forehead. Was friends with the sculptor phidias but was not friends with cimon. Pericles, the acropolis and the architecture of empire. Delian league spent funds on rebuilding this. Athenian acropolis rebuilt after end of greco-persian wars during the so called golden age of athens 460-430 bce. Area of acropolis inhabited since the bronze age, archaic temple to athena burned during siege of athens by persians in 480 bce. Construction interrupted by peloponnesian wars, resumed after end of wars in 421. Minoan/mycenaean - geometric- archaic - classical - hellenistic. Archaic to classical - more detailed, more realistic.
