Hypothesis
● language is a part of the story
ex: how prospero dominates those of the island

Two of the Most Important Characters
Prospero: the ruler, dominant
Caliban: subject, shown as “weaker” and “less” despite being on the land before
CHANGE
— this is a play about CHANGE
● language utilized highly to have power
● ex: prospero talks that most, no one has room to speak, his utilization of language is his
attempt to maintain his desire for power
● BOOK as another form of paper for Prospero
ex: he bought his “power”, because he bought his books that taught him knowledge and control
—Prospero’s emotions: controlling, stubborn; does not listen to his daughter
CHANGE 2
● Prospero at the end, gives, forgives and gives up his power
