Document Summary

Spanish myths of conquest justified their conquest and empire. Spanish killed the last inca, execution of tupac amaru: countering the myths of spanish conquest, myth #1 -- incas and andeans thought that the spanish were gods. Called the spaniards viracochas because they thought they were children of heaven. Spanish show up in the incan empire -- 1590. Try to understand the primary source -- identity of the author, where she/he came from, etc. Historians always try to understand the agenda of the primary source/author. If indigenous (smart, rational) people can convert to christianity(superior), they can rule themselves, if they cannot convert(spaniards would rule them until they were converted to christianity), mentally incapable, then they could not rule themselves. Primary source: titu cusi yupanqui (1570) -- differed much from us in clothing appearance and because they rode very large animals with silver feet each was so different . Myth #2 -- the spanish had superior weapons and technology.
