Think about the way that native american women were portrayed. Reality: she was 12 + he was 27 when they had their romance. Fertile new world portrayed in her body -> part of sexualized colonialism. Happy because they are going to new world for religious freedom. Reality: forced puritanism on everyone -> power + control. Didn"t make it to mainland north america. Think of columbus reaching the new world in 1492. Colonization of n. america was part of trans-atlantic world. People from all over were forced to travel across the atlantic. People tend not to be familiar w/native american territories. Territorial claims are estimated because they were destroyed. Europeans were laying claim to territory that was already held by others. Images of african people in minds of europeans. Sea monsters -> nobody knows what is there (seen as dangerous) Pictures in margin: meant to show various african cultures + dress.
