Women provide about 70% of calories for community. Women do all of the farm work + agricultural work. Different activities, months of year, key for males, females, + children. Labor that men are doing have longer cycles. Women helped w/hunting + fishing (minor roles -> prepare the animals) Trading + warfare only in summer + manufacturing only in winter. Can only get to others to fight and/or trade in summer. Often people had children because they need laborers. Do fewer things but for longer period of time. Women have more diverse activities that they have to do -> change more. See native men as idle because they do not farm. Area of conflict over gender dynamics + where supposed to work. Hunting in europe is an elite sport. Powhatan know europeans unable to feed themselves. Set the stage for perpetuation of race-based slavery in north america. Common for laborers to be taxed (lifts)
