- What prompted OSFW’s?
- US did not have a large enough labor force
- needed more to perform hard labor
- ex. “stoop labor” -> farm work
- labor that white laborers did not want to do
- paid Filipinos less for same type of labor
- would work for less
*white Americans felt that they were competing w/Filipino workers
- wanted to be paid more for the same type of work
- Filipino workers exploited
- economic inequality became part of social structure that created race-based
problems
- many Filipino workers are seamen, nannies, nurses, child caretakers, house
cleaners, etc. -> care work
- American institutions that needed more laborers -> brought in Filipinos
since not enough white laborers
- considered respectable form of labor in Filipino culture
- valued working to care for others
- needed to fill labor voids in American care system

- many Americans during time period were illiterate
- ethnography becomes more effective for those who cannot read
- makes information more accessible
- becomes lens through which everyone understands a group of people
- put in news publications + seeps into advertising
- Concept of Minstrels
- minstrel (def): a member of band of entertainers with blacked faces, performing
songs + music associated with the black communities of the southern US
- US history: white people would darken their faces in order to put on shows
- many Jewish participated in minstrel shows
- wanted to be accepted by white culture
- middle class could afford to go to the minstrel shows
- usually was variety of acts -> singing, dancing, acting
- heavily racialized w/lots of stereotypes
- ex. picnic with fried chicken
- reinforced racial stereotypes
- white appropriation of black entertainment
