- beautiful conceptions of Iran are also not all there is
- primary sources are trying to convey personal experience + trying to give accurate of
representation of culture for better or for worse
- self-Orientalization can mean internalizing stereotypes about culture + area
- might see something as self-Orientalization because looking through Euro-centric
perspective
- Satrapi more critical view of Euro-centric values (seen in her essay)
- made her film in language that doesn’t necessarily cater to Americans
- could it still be possible to have internalized stereotypes from Western cultures + to
self-Orientalize through that?

religious to her suicide
- makes suicide appear sublime
- way of her getting her freedom -> almost like want viewer to be happy
for her
- makes the suicide appear ethereal + angelic almost
- representation in the book does not allude to that

- Parsipur 65
- passage describing when Zarrinkolah went to bath house + made masseuse scrub
her aggressively -> almost to point of bleeding
- wants to perform some sort of cleansing/purification ritual
- portrayed as if she inflicts pain on herself -> not account of her complaining
- some kind of self-punishment or reminder of her humanity
- some kind of penance for sin
- very visceral detail
- no mention of her suffering or resisting to the pain
- willingly putting herself through pain in order to cleanse herself
- scene from film of bathhouse (Neshat)
- emphasizes curvature of the body
