Relationship Between Imperialist Powers & Populations
- Vo -> imperial powers were devastating
- created to diaspora
- came down on the people living in Asia
- Rahimieh -> less emphasis on external imperial powers
- looked at the way that people within the empire reacted
- individuals have agency
- Individual’s Own Agency v. External Imperial Powers
- Iran -> emphasis on how American foreign policy + influence on Iran
- more emphasis in lecture on agency of Iranians themselves
- does coup distract from Human rights violations Iran?
- Iranians in diaspora have certain memories of Iran + sometimes there is
nostalgia for that past
- Vo + Cambodia -> population itself seems to be turning against itself

- Lewis + Shakespeare -> difficult to separate individual agency from influence of
imperial power
- can see in Caliban in particular -> Caliban made who he is by Prospero

- how much control + agency does someone have over their life?
- have to navigate through various political systems

- students are told to be authentic -> can be hard to do with external
influences
- have to look at own value + way that you communicate in order to find
out how much of what you do is authentic to who you are
- citizens have responsibility to ask ourselves difficult questions
- opposing whatever is dominant power + fighting for own agency -> can be
authentic
- can be natural to think that
- there can be a danger in blind criticism + pointing toward political
system as the problem
- makes it too easy for people to avoid blame entirely
- can be more destructive than helpful -> unable to engage in conversation
with the other side
- immature to think that if had different president his followers will
just go away
