Document Summary

In the revenant, hugh glass, the protagonist, is born of european descent however. Throughout the course, ideas from orientalism and manifest destiny have been displayed throughout the series of works we read and analyzed. The work that i would like to bring focus to is the revenant. This work explores how the effects of manifest destiny has infiltrated the lives of the native indians while also incorporating orientalism stemmed-ideas that created deep strains between the european-indian relationship. It also identifies the underlying reality of borderlands: their consistently changing nature and anti-dualism. The revenant can account these concepts through the narratives of mestizo characters: hugh glass and hawk. adopts the pawnee culture when he marries a pawnee indian woman and has a mixed son, hawk. Both glass and hawk are forced to leave their tribe and work for a european pelt industry, where the workers are prejudiced against the indians, who they call tree niggers".
