Anglo-american martial ideals (and not so ideals -> chastity, fidelity, monogomy) Man + wife become one -> religious idea that becomes legal idea. Little commonwealth -> individual households (man + wife) Idea that households should replicate hierarchies of larger societies. Ex. women testifying against husband equivalent to him against himself. Hierarchies represent good government at multiple levels. Why marriage considered fundamental building block of society. To my dear and loving husband by anne bradstreet, 1678. Talks about her devotion + love for her husband. Ideal: woman loves her husband + prizes his love the most. Unmarried women should be quiet + not show wit. Have to wait until they are married -> enjoy privilege of speech. Women wanting to speak in marriage compared to men wanting to speak in parliament. Tension between how women act before + after marriage.
