Women Without Men Film Adaption
Diaspora
- Iranian writers living in Diaspora
- author of Women Without Men living in US
- refers to different groups of people migrating + dispersing
- whether voluntary or involuntary
- virtually any mass migration
- dates back to Greek era
- generally thought in terms of ‘homelessness’ -> convey sense of trauma + exile but
lately viewed more positively
- new more advanced stage of politics, culture, etc.
- significant diaspora community of Iranians in CA
- inevitably distanced from the homeland
- progression + change happens in home country + where moved to
- notion of diaspora does not mean living in same culture in different place
The Film
- films significantly different from the book
- leaves out Makdohkt entirely
- different to bring into film
- Munis’ brother does not stab her
- background historical story becomes more prominent
- making of the film connected to Neshat’s experience of diaspora
- was inspired to make art after returning to Iran
- shocked by how much has changed in her country -> frightened
- arriving in Iran after the revolution produced fear + anxiety
- distance is part of what she brings into process of creating film
- feelings of alienation + could sense the destruction + loss within Iran
- identification + disidentification at same time -> can lead to exotification of own
culture
Parsipur (Author) as an Actor in the Film
- played the woman running the brothel
- appears to be very involved + into playing the part
- enjoyed being part of Neshat’s interpretation of her novel
- very different from what she had written
- why would she play that role?
- goes against history of women bearing the role of maintaining purity + chastity
- willingness to play the role acts as critique of way that Iranian culture for
ignoring the taboos about roles of women
