PP&D 132 Lecture 8: PP&D Week 8

38 views1 pages
During our week 8 lecture we watched a documentary called “Daughters of the Forest.”
Through this eye opening fit we had the opportunity to learn about the many diverse
cultures and communities in Paraguay from different perspectives. It was shocking to
see how high the pregnancy rates for teens were, reaching almost 70 percent in rural
areas in comparison to the 30 percent in urban areas. The main reason behind this was
the fact that these girls did not have the means to receive proper social and academic
education and achieve any goals they might have, so they all just became pregnant
around the age of 13 and had to stay home to take care of their children. However,
through this school, the girls had the opportunity to see a world outside of being a
housewife. Along with showing the importance of education, this program also fights
gender inequality. Through this program the girls were able to do jobs that were only
perceived to be done by men. Just by watching this movie we were able to see a huge
transformation in the confidence of these girls and how much they benefitted from this
program. It empowered young women and gave them the independence and the means
to pursue their goals and achieve greater things in life. At the end of the movie we could
see how by the time these girls graduated, they were way more stronger, smarter,
skillful, and prepared for the hardships that they would face later in life compared to
other girls in their communities who were not a part of this program. We also had the
opportunity to meet and ask questions to learn about the program directly from its
founders. As we went on with our Q&A, one of our guest speakers talked about some of
the benefits of this program and the achievements that their students had. He also said
how they have created a similar program for boys as well and are planning to enroll
more students and improve the school in quality.
Hello Madalyn! I definitely agree with your perspective that education is a crucial part of
every individual's life and that without it we will not have the proper means to succeed in
life. It was shocking to see how many people do not have access to any type of
education which in turn causes high pregnancy rates, health problems, and poverty.
Just like you, I also believe that the lack of education is the root cause of poverty, and
that if we could solve that problem by giving everyone equal educational opportunities
we would live in a better and more sustainable world.
