Today"s chapter is about countries that have transitioned away from communist systems since the end of the cold war. A key theme is the variation in post-communist states: Poland and slovenia, have firmly joined the west and adopted the political and economic systems of other advanced democracies. China and cuba, have maintained formal rule by communist parties even as they adopt more market-oriented economic systems. Others, like russia as well as the more extreme north korea, have remained generally authoritarian. Set of political ideas about class and politics. Includes theories about why economies grow, why people start revolutions. An ideology about how society should function. Includes prescriptions about how workers should organize and overthrow market-based systems. Two main groups of people in society: People who own capital (factories, shops, etc. ) Politics in a state happens at two levels: The base is where the real politics happens; superstructure is mostly a distraction. History is about the struggle between classes.
