POL SCI 61A Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Asian Americans, Majority Minority, Social Capital
Document Summary
Week 3, thursday, intro to race and ethnicity. First application paper announced today and due next thursday. Have week 3 readings done next thursday. Asian-americans, like jews, are indeed a problem for the social-justice" brigade. I mean, how on earth have these groups done so well in a profoundly racist society? . This props up success of asian americans to delegitimize claims from other groups. Across the political spectrum, there is an idea that success from some groups delegitimize others. Perhaps most surprising is that, by many measures, the most-educated immigrant group in the us isn"t east asians. This isn"t publicized because it goes against long standing narratives of blacks in the us. Some have argued that the disparity in wages between black and white is the result of whites workers working longer and harder than black workers. Often these narratives are proved wrong, and show that all the groups aren"t much different.
