Discussion 1/13/16 corresponds to lecture 1, 2. On niccolo machiavelli: machiavelli realism sort of politics; realpolitik. On being a leader, how to be a leader, characteristics of the leader, etc. Not how men ought to be, but how they actually are. Draws on a lot of past that successful societies/governments have experienced. A good leader is going to look at history and base their behavior on prominent successful figures of the past. Have the support of the populace instead of the elite. Not because he believes in an ideal democracy, but because having support of a population causes less problems in the future. The elite are already in power they have no problem dislodging you, but the populace will support you. The elite view you as an equal so why should you be in power when they can be in power? versus the population"s view of you as a leader.
