Written to be read by assemblyline workers of the mid 19th century, not for philosophical academies, the elite of france or england, etc. Collar assembly-line workers to get them involved in politics. For those factory workers this was going to be their document to understanding the world. History was a unified realm of phenomena, marked by certain regularities and which followed a determinant evolutionary process. part of the spirit of the time was a scientific spirit; marx & engels present themselves as scientists of history. To find the determinant motor forces, via economic determinism (economic structure = foundation for everything else). The idea of the dialectic is that in any moment in time, there is a dominant way of organizing the economy; there is a thesis that gives rise to a contradiction antithesis.
