Mastery striving: not only outcome of behavior, it is the experience/joy of mastering something, motivates exploration and control striving. Staying in range that motivates action: too emotional --> helpless, discouragement. Just right --> take on next challenge and keep trying to expand one"s control of environment. Reactivity in internal and external sources (cries, etc. ) Varies in intensity and duration of reaction/response: self-regulation: automatic --> effortful. Nature: those with one gene made a difference in parenting quality. Nurture: parents" interaction, emotional support, respect of autonomy, level of hostility influences emotional regulation development. For effortful control, no genetic or parenting effect. Environmental: maternal responsiveness (bell, ainsworth, 1972): study. Stability of infant crying very low --> not biological. Mothers" ignoring prompts infants to cry more and longer. Mothers" responding leads to infants to cry less and shorter.
