• Defining Development
o What causes people to change or remain the same over time?
• What causes people to engage in certain behaviors
• People = people of all ages
• Personality is fairly stable; certain facets remain the same
o Science of human development: seeks to understand how and why people o all ages
and circumstances change or remain the same over time.
• Developmental Theories Variations
o Early Development v. Lifespan Approach
• Early Development:
▪ Early life experiences/Early development key
▪ Reogizes later hages ut these do’t lead to fudaetally differet
outcomes
• Lifespan Development
▪ All phases of life taken into account
▪ The "multis" (complexity of these experiences)
• Multidiretionality: (does not occur in the same direction/rate) -
decline or increase
• Multicontextual: (ex. Teenager puts up graffiti mural - angry and
has friends who do the same - the combination influences his
actions)
• Multicultural:
• Culture: system of shared beliefs, norms, behaviors, and
expectations that persist over time and prescribe social
behavior
• Ethnicity: belonging to a social group with a common cultural
or national history/tradition
• Race: Label used to categorize people based on physical
appearance
• Social Construction
• Multidisciplinary: science is multidisciplinary enterprise (science
looks at many facets: alleles, depression, diet, education,
relationships)
▪ The Myths And Truths About Co-Sleeping
• When infants sleep with their parents in the same bed
• Some argue that SID (sudden infant death syndrome ) is
attributed to Co-Sleeping
• Fiberizing: letting baby cry it out until they realize
• Risk for SIDS increases when parents (either) use drugs or alcohol,
when mothers smoked in pregnancy or postnatally, or co-sleeping
on sofa
