PSY BEH 101D Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Redone, Measles, Prenatal Diagnosis
Document Summary
Lecture 3 chapter 2: the start of life. The sample that you are studying really matters! You must make sure that your sample reflects what you are looking at. Ex: women and love researcher claimed that 98% of people are dissatisfied with their marriage and 75% of them had an extra marital affair but only 4% responded! Same survey done with a random sample found 93% of people were satisfied with their marriage. You won"t find anything meaningful about the population if you only collect data from 4% of them unless the rest of the people are exactly similar to that 4% (not likely ) Pay attention to who you want to study and get enough of them! Remember: correlations do not prove causality but they do provide important information. There are also limitations to some research conducting: not everyone is 100% honest when they fill out surveys, for example. Asking kids to give opinions on toys is a survey.
