PSY BEH 101D Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Lung Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, Low-Density Lipoprotein
Document Summary
Notes: cardiovascular system, cardiovascular disease increases a lot in middle age. Level of cholesterol in blood increases through adult years. Ldl (low-density lipoprotein): bad cholesterol because when the level of ldl is too high, it sticks to the lining of blood vessels, a condition that can lead to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Hdl (high-density lipoprotein): good cholesterol because when it is high and ldl is low, the risk of cardiovascular disease is lessened. Linked to a higher probability of being alive at 85 years of age. In middle age, cholesterol begins to accumulate on the artery walls, which are thickening: blood pressure rises (hypertension) in forties and fifities, and high blood pressure is linked with increased mortality rate and other cognitive functioning. Ex: a recent study revealed that hypertension in middle age was linked to an increased risk of cognitive impairment in late adulthood.
