Proximodistal pattern: sequence that starts at the center of the body and moves towards the extremities. Increase rapidly: slows considerably in the second year of life, brain/head biggest proportion of the body. Early childhood: percentage of increase in height and weight decreases with each additional year, vary individually. Due to heredity, but environmental experiences are also involved. Middle and late childhood: slow, consistent growth, changes in proportions. Rapid physical maturation with hormonal and physical changes. Menarche: girl"s first menstruation - late in the pubertal cycle. Growth spurt occurs approximately two years earlier for girls than for boys. Timing and variations: average age of menarche has declined significantly since the mid-nineteenth century. Improved nutrition and health: onset of puberty is still occurring earlier in girls and boys, due to genetics, nutrition, health, family stress and other environmental factors (child sexual abuse). Preoccupation with one"s body image: gender differences: Girls tend to have more negative body images.
