Notes: other adults, media, and peers, observing other adults in the neighborhood and media, peers become increasingly important. Peers extensively reward and punish gender behavior. Ex: when children play in ways that culture says are sex- appropriate, they tend to be rewarded by peers. Those who engage in sex-inappropriate activities tend to be criticized or abandoned by their peers. More acceptable for girls to act like boys than boys to act like girls, term tomboy less derogatory than sissy : 4-12: children tend to play with exclusively their own sex. Compliance, following rules, and being neat and orderly are valued reinforced in many classrooms. Large majority of teachers are females, especially at the elementary school level. May make it more difficult for boys than for girls to identify with their teachers and model their teachers" behavior: study male teachers perceived boys more positively and saw them as more educationally comptenant than did female teachers.
