PSY BEH 102C Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Eugen Bleuler, Dementia Praecox, Catatonia
Document Summary
Emil kraeplin (used dementia praecox to describe schizophrenic syndrome) Early subtypes of schizophrenia (catatonia, hebephrenia and paranoia) Hallucinations: sensory experiences that occur in the absence of sensory stimuli. Affective flattening: restricted range/intensity of emotional expression. Cognitive slippage - illogical and incoherent speech. Tangentiality - going off on a tangent . Loose associations - conversation in unrelated directions. Symptoms present for at least 1 month. Continuous signs of disturbance for 6+ months. Level of functioning in 1+ major areas is markedly below prior level. Other explanations or disorders are ruled out. Psychotic symptoms lasting between 1-6 months (>6 months =schizophrenia) Both disorders associated with relatively good functioning. Symptoms of schizophrenia + additional experience of a major mood episode (depressive or manic) Psychotic symptoms must also occur outside the mood disturbances. Prognosis is similar for people with schizophrenia. Such persons do not tend to get better on their own. Key feature: delusions that are contrary to reality.
