In colonial america, drinking was much more common than it is today because other sources of liquids weren"t safe to consume. In 1920 - 18th amendment outlawed the sale of alcohol (prohibition) Current drinking - 12 drinks during your life and 1 drink during the past year. Binge drinking - 5 or more drinks of the same occasion at least once a month. Heavy drinking - for men: more than 14/wk, for women: more than 7/wk. 10& are binge drinkers and 5% are heavy drinkers. Ages 25-44 have highest rates of drinking. Men more likely to drink than women. People with higher education are more likely to drink. European americans have highest rate of consumption. Native american & asian american have lowest rates. Binge drinking - hispanic and native americans have highest rates. Heavy drinking - european and native american have highest rates. Metabolized by 2 enzymes which breaks down one compound into many.
