Infliction of pain to get something you want. It is part of our genetic makeup to be aggressive: aggression provides adaptive advantage. Organisms have evolved to have a cost-benefit analysis when deciding to show aggression. Instinctual theories predict that human aggression should be. Aggression is not similar in form in humans nor uniform in distribution. Mental illness: but, most people who are violent do not have mental illnesses. Instinctual theories are too general: explain generally why there is so much aggression but not specific acts of aggression. Biological theories are too specific: explain some specific acts of aggression but not more common acts of aggression. Focus on specific situational antecedents of aggression: those things in situations that trigger people to be aggressive. Aggression is always a product of frustration.
