Commuters on nyc subway see someone give wrong directions. When you construe someone to be abusive, you are less likely to intervene. If the bully was sitting quietly, 50% intervenes by a cost-benefit analysis. Seminary students asked to give lecture on either: careers for minsters, parable of the good samaritan. Told either: late, ready for you, plenty of time. On way across campus, came upon a man in distress. Dv = % of people who stopped to help. Neither lecture topic nor any personality measure predicted helping behavior. The only thing that mattered was the cost of helping (late or not: and not whether they were going to give one talk or the other. Focused on situational determinants of helping: very successful. Highly cognitive: treated helping as an emotionless decision making process. Good mood promotes helping: people are more likely to help after finding a dime in a pay phone.
