First trimester - most likely result from chromosomal abnormalities. Second trimester - problems with uterus, followed by chromosomal abnormalities. Ntd - abnormal development of the neural tube. Portion of body that becomes spine and brain. Spina bifida - incomplete closure of posterior neural tube; paralysis and nerve damage. Anencephaly - incomplete closing of anterior neural tube; stillbirth or death. Because it is very important very early, it"s important that they take vitamins before they conceive a child. Can be caused by environment (maternal illness, meds) or genetic influences. Dominant - huntington"s disease or achondroplasia (both on chromosome 4) Recessive - pku (chromosome 12), or sickle cell anemia (chromosome 11) Infants often undergo a procedure to determine if they have pku. Blood cells transform into the shape of sickles. Cells are abnormally shaped, so they are removed from circulation (causing anemia) Adaptive when heterozygous - protects against infection from malaria because spleen removes abnormal cells that may be infected with malaria.
