• what is HIV
o human immunodeficiency virus
o can only infect human beings
o weakens the body’s immune system by destroying important cells that fight
disease and infection
o virus your body cannot get rid of and replicates quickly
• what is AIDS?
o acquired immune deficiency syndrome
o late stage of HIV infection
o severely damaged immune system
o difficult to fight diseases and certain cancers
o requires medical intervention to prevent death
• HIV symptoms
o severe flu-like symptoms

▪ severe sore throat
▪ swollen lymph glands
▪ fatigue
o 10 days to 3 months post unprotected or “risky” sexual behavior
o may not show symptoms
• how is it spread
o when an HIV positive person gives an uninfected person these fluids
▪ blood

▪ pre-seminal fluid
▪ vaginal fluid
▪ breast milk
• how is it NOT spread
o sweat or tears
o urine
o saliva
o casual contact
o sharing the same toilet
o air or water
o insect bites, including mosquitos
• getting tested
o 1 in 5 people are undiagnosed
o 60% of youth with HIV do not know that they are infected
o important to get tested to stop the spread
• getting tested
o testing is anonymous and free at many sites
o results within 20 minutes
