Sexual Coercion

▪ according to NHSLH 17% of women and 12% of men reported having had
sexual contact as a child with an adolescent (aged 14-17) or an adult

• boys: mostly men
• touching of genitals
• girls: 33% < age 7, 40% age 7-10
• family friends and relatives
• biggest myth of child about is that the dangers to children come
from strangers. in most cases, the perpetrator is someone the parent
or child knows, and is often trusted by the child and family

• meets child online, sets up face-to-face meeting
• 18% girls, 8% boys received solicitation
o impact of child sexual abuse
▪ effects can be serious and long lasting
• re-traumatization by having to testify
• depression, anxiety, eating disorders, teen mothers…
• compared to non-victims, victims of childhood sexual abuse 1.5
times more likely than non-victims to have had serious health
problems in the last year
